GEOGRAPHY / DEMOGRAPHICS

The Town of Souris is located 50 kilometers south west of Brandon, Manitoba’s second largest city. Souris is a progressive community with a population base of approximately 1700 residents.

ECONOMIC BASE

Despite its proximity to Brandon, Souris is a full service community with retail, education, health care and recreation facilities and services. Souris is one of the few rural communities in Canada whose population increased since the last census. Agricultural business and services are an important element of the economy of Souris with the focus on mixed grain with a number of producers who have diversified into cattle, hogs and equine production. Souris is on the main Canadian Pacific Rail line. Maple Leaf Agri-Farms Inc. and Terra have invested heavily into the area with a new feed mill and inland grain terminal. Other primary employers are in health care, education, government services and child care.

RECREATION BASE

With its many unique attractions, Souris appeals to both residents and visitors alike. With Travel Manitoba designating the Souris Swinging Bridge as a Star Attraction we enjoy visitors from all over the world. With the Souris River running through our community, many take advantage of the water through activities such as the River Barge Ride, water-skiing, canoeing, and fishing.

If you enjoy the outdoors, you will appreciate the beautiful Victoria Park that is located in the center of our community. The Park hosts a bird sanctuary, picnic grounds, playground, swimming pool and campground, a natural amphitheatre for outdoor concerts and events such as the RCMP Musical Ride and Music in The Park Festival. The Park offers great walking trails through a natural forest with a beautiful view of the Town from a viewing tower.

Souris is a sports oriented community full of quality recreation venues. Golfing, rock hounding, bird watching and hiking provide residents an opportunity to get away from it all. Souris boasts a strong contingent of local and provincial team oriented sports such as curling, figure skating and hockey which are hosted in an Olympic sized skating rink and impressive 4 sheet-curling rink. Souris is proud of it’s $5 million Community Complex which offers year-round meeting rooms, community hall, and banquet amenities.
