The communities of Shoal Lake and Strathclair are located along the Yellowhead Highway 16. These two communities are approximately a one-hour drive from the City of Brandon and a three-hour drive from the City of Winnipeg. The RM of Shoal Lake includes the Village of Oakburn on Highways 21 and 45.
Agriculture and tourism are the driving force of the economy in these communities. The soil is rich and fertile, and a variety of cereal crops and oilseeds are grown productively in the region. Several family and commercial livestock operation run in the area supplying generic and purebred animals to producers and processors locally and abroad. A number of agri-businesses in the area accommodate the needs of the agricultural community including five implement dealers, bulk fuel, chemical suppliers, livestock feed processor and others.
The communities of Shoal Lake and Strathclair each have a recreational facility, which includes an indoor skating arena and a curling rink with full kitchen facilities. The community of Shoal Lake has a beautiful 9-hole golf course as well as a beach area and lake for water activities. Lakefront property is available for development. The community of Strathclair is approximately 10 miles from Salt Lake, which is used by many residents from the area throughout the summer months. Thomas Lake is also situated in the RM of Strathclair with a beach and good fishing and boating.
Strathclair is home to the Bend Theatre, a very special building crafted in the 1940s. The theatre has become home to the Strathclair Drama Club, which provides a full-length musical to sell out crowds each April.
