GEOGRAPHY / DEMOGRAPHICS

Erickson is often referred to as the “Gateway to Riding Mountain National Park”. The community is situated on Highway 1– en route to the park and is surrounded by agricultural communities. Erickson is nestled in a very scenic countryside with Leda Lake in the background. It is a 45 minute drive to the City of Brandon and a 3 hour drive to the City of Winnipeg.

ECONOMIC BASE

The agricultural land and many farms surrounding Erickson give rise to many businesses and services in the town. The surrounding area is a rich mixture of grain, oilseed, specialty crops, dairy farms, cow/calf operations and feedlots. The town caters to the farming community by providing supplies and inputs, as well as equipment sales and repair facilities.

As one of the last urban centres before the entrance to Riding Mountain National Park, the town also has a strong service industry that provides retail goods, supplies and provisions to vacationers entering the park for a weekend camping trip, or an extended backcountry stay. Other features of the landscape attract scores of hunters and fishermen to the area while seasons are open. Food and lodging services are available in town, as well as guiding and outfitting establishments. Tourism booms in Erickson throughout all seasons of the year.

RECREATION BASE

There is always something to do in this active community. During the winter months, the area is alive with cross-country skiers travelling many kilometres of groomed trails in the area. A nearby downhill facility caters to skiers who prefer a little more excitement. The area has many groomed snowmobile trails, and connects to the larger Manitoba trails network. Horseback riding is a year round activity in Erickson, and there is always the possibility of a romantic sleigh ride.

The summer months are every bit as active in Erickson. Riding Mountain National Park offers many hiking, biking and horse trails ranging from a few hours trip, to multi-day trips. Lakes and rivers in the area provide many fishing, boating and watersport opportunities for everyone to enjoy.

The community of Erickson also has a recreation complex which includes a skating and curling rink.
