Scholarships/Bursaries/Grants

The Assiniboine RHA in collaboration with the various communities is pleased to offer the following scholarships or bursary programs to students. The following list may be exclusive of some community or individual specific scholarships or bursaries. Please contact your applicable School and or School Division for additional information.

Community Scholarships / Bursaries / Awards

Birtle

MNU Local #54 has a Faye Burton Memorial scholarship in the amount of $200.00 to a grad entering Nursing School.

Boissevain

MNU Local #71 has a $300.00 scholarship for a high school grad from Boissevain who will be attending Nursing School in the province of Manitoba in September.

Carberry

The local Health Auxiliary offers a $200 scholarship.

MNU local has a scholarship in the amount of $150.

Deloraine Town

Money is available from Med Friends Group for students in medicine in return for service to the Deloraine area.

Deloraine Collegiate

Local MNU #70 – 2 bursaries one for any Deloraine student going into Nursing in the amount $100.00 and one from the Deloraine Health Auxiliary in the amount of $200.00 over 2 years to any Deloraine student entering any field in medicine.

Hartney

Local MNU #82 has a $250.00 bursary to a graduate going into Nursing School.

Hamiota

MNU Local #83 has a $200.00 scholarship to a graduate attending Nursing School.

Hamiota Physicians Group offers a $500 bursary for anyone who has graduated from high school in the municipalities of Woodworth, Hamiota, Miniota or Blanshard. This will be awarded to a candidate who can provide confirmation of acceptance into a Faculty of Medicine. Application will constitute a photocopy of the acceptance letter, confirmation of registration plus high school diploma. Applications can be mailed to:

Killarney

Local MNU #85 has $250.00 available to a high school grad from Killarney Collegiate who will be attending Nursing School in Manitoba.

Melita

The Melita Health Auxiliary provides each year a $600 bursary for a student from Melita or Pierson area that is going into some aspect of human medicine: eg. Nurse, doctor, physiotherapist, dentist, lab technician, medical secretary etc. It is payable (after proof of acceptance to the school of their choice), in two instalments $300 for the first year and if they continue for a second year they will receive the other $300. It is awarded in June at the high school graduation ceremonies.

Local MNU #113 – $150.00 bursary to graduating student from Melita or Pierson High School entering career of nursing.

Minnedosa

New bursary scholarship in the amount of $500.00 is awarded to a graduating student who is enrolled in a program related to the health care field. Applicants are required to submit a 200 word essay outlining their motivation for choosing a career in health care. For further information, please contact Terry Wareham.

Neepawa

Neepawa Health Auxiliary gives $1000 to a student entering training for a Health Care Profession.

MNU Local has a scholarship of $200.

Reston

Reston Drug store offers $300.00 bursary to any one from Reston Collegiate going into Medical field Pharmacy, Physio, Nursing, or Medicine.

Rossburn

MNU Local #57 currently voting to give $100.00 bursary to a student in Medical Field. Process to be discussed annually.

Russell

Local MNU #15 – $500.00 for a student entering the Nursing Program. Money is given to student at completion of 2nd year of program.

Both foundation and Auxiliaries for Rossburn and Russell provide bursaries.

Shoal Lake

MNU Local #50 has a $100.00 bursary to a graduate from Shoal Lake entering a Nursing Program.

MNU Local #50 has a $100.00 bursary to a graduate from Strathclair entering a Nursing Program.

The town of Shoal Lake, R.M. of Shoal Lake, and Shoal Lake-Strathclair Health Centre District Foundation, Inc. will offer a Health Care Employment incentive to any health care professional (physicians, nurses, technologists, therapists, etc.) hired to fill a vacancy at the Shoal Lake-Strathclair Health Centre, effective August 15, 2005. The incentive will be $7,500 for physicians and $4,000 for other health care professionals payable in one lump sum by the Shoal Lake Regional Community Development Corporation following the signing of a written agreement. Souris

In Souris there are a couple of bursaries that are available for students graduating from high school, some specifically for health care, some state health or education, some state for a student going into sciences.

Tiger Hills

MNU local provides $250 to a student who has completed one year post secondary in Health Care field. Criteria available.

Holland Auxiliary has a $500.00 scholarship for a Senior 4 high school student entering a health care field.

Wawanesa

The “Hospital Aide” provides $200 to a senior four graduating student entering the Health Care field.

Virden

Virden Health Auxiliary offers a $1000 bursary to a high school student entering a health care field. The student would receive $500 for the first year and $500 for the second year if they continue in the program.

The Local MNU has established criteria for a bursary with funds yet to be put aside.

Park West School Division

The MacPhail Memorial Fund Bursary- For post high school diploma graduates enrolled in a University, Community College, Bible College or recognized educational institution in specific career studies from the communities of Birtle, Shoal Lake or Rossburn. Bursary amounts awarded from the income that the original investment generates.

The Lauman Memorial Fund- For post high school diploma graduates enrolled in a University, Community College or School of Nursing where the program of studies is two years or longer. Applicant needs to have been a graduate of any of the former Birdtail River School Division high schools.

Other Scholarships / Bursaries / Awards

Assiniboine MNU Regional Scholarship –

A scholarship of $500 is available annually to an Assiniboine rural area student accepted into a nursing program.

DSM (Diagnostic Services of Manitoba) –

DSM offers an educational sponsorship program to students enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Radiologic Technology programs at Red River College. Accepted students will receive reimbursement for tuition and books for the two-year diploma program (approx. $8,500), provide any additional cross-training that is required and guarantee full-time employment upon completion of the program in exchange for a three-year return of service commitment in a rural or northern facility.
